How do I get the number of steam friends online to use in a piece of software eg. to change an led colour or...

I want to know (if it is possible) how I can get the number of steam friends online to insert into a script or program to do something like changing an led colour or providing data for a desktop widget etc.

If you are able to help please tell me how I would go about doing this.

Thanks!

P.S. I got my idea from here: Xbox Live Traffic Light Notifies You When Friends are Gaming

P.P.S what about Overwatch?
